About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Ruth Gibb is a very sweet little sampler stitched entirely in cross stitch over 2 threads and using only one colour – a rich, deep red, which concentrates the eye. The stitches pop out from the linen like jewels.
The lacy border frames the alphabets which are stitched in a very pretty font. The capital letter alphabet has an anomaly in the sequence of letters. The line ends with V X, and the W Y Z are stitched below. Either this was an error by Ruth, or it seems more likely to be by design, as the number of stitches needed to stitch the W would make it too big for the space at the end of the row. Perhaps she stitched the border first and then realised it wouldn’t fit and improvised. We’ll never know, but you can decide which way you think it was."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"The sampler is contained within a carefully planned and elaborate border that is heavily laden with leaves, flowers both in full bloom and in bud. The border needs careful counting, and we would recommend that you stitch out the single vine that undulates around the border first before adding the leaves, flowers and buds.
The text is stitched in cross stitch over two threads and is taken from a hymn by Issac Watts who was an English Christian minister, hymn writer, theologian, and logician. He was a prolific and popular hymn writer and is credited with some 750 hymns. He is recognized as the “Godfather of English Hymnody.” Verses from his hymns were very popular with young needleworkers and their school teachers and appear in many samplers."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Martha Guthrie is such a pretty Scottish sampler! We were drawn to the “freshness” of the palette she chose to stitch her schoolgirl sampler with. Martha recorded that she finished her sampler on December 20, 1880, which was a Monday. She tells us that she attended Lady Anne Speirs’ school and in the tradition of Scottish samplers notes her parents’ and siblings’ initials.
Martha was born on May 15, 1868 at Bridgeton, Lanarkshire to Gilbert Guthrie (GG) and Catherine née Knox (CK). She was the second of four children born to her parents. Gilbert (GG) was the eldest; then Agnes (AG) and Robert (RG) were born after Martha. Her father was recorded as having various occupations; throughout the decades, he worked as a carter, boilermaker, and rivetter. The family moved from Bridgeton to Renfrew, Glasgow, sometime between 1868 and 1871 when they are recorded as living on the High Street at number 88 and in 1881 at number 112."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Annie Morris is the sweetest little sampler. Her dainty border of violets surrounds an alphabet broken up by some pretty dividing rows and a basket of fruit. Annie recorded her age but alas not the year or where she lived. Without this information we were unable to trace our Annie.
Annie used a palette of just five colours to stitch her sampler. On first seeing this sampler, it was her palette that caused us to stop and study her work. We wondered if this little girl was influenced by an older sister, mother, or aunt who was a suffragette."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Mary Ann Ragg recorded that she was 12 years old in 1826 when she finished her sampler. However, this is not the only clue to her identity that she left behind. The pastoral scene, red building, mature cedar trees, birds, and cartouche are characteristic to samplers stitched in the city of Sheffield.
Several years ago, Hands Across the Sea Samplers reproduced another sampler that was stitched in Sheffield, Elizabeth Furniss. Whilst researching this sampler, we discovered five girls who stitched very similar samplers. They all lived within 1 square mile of each other; in the ensuing years we found several more.
Many of these girls were baptised in the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul. We believe that the girls shared the same needlework teacher, and all probably attended Darnall School (assuming that the teacher taught in the same school between 1816 and 1844)."

An inquisitive pigeon, head cocked, perches on the bough of a flowering Prunus tree."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

Ellen tells us that “Hannah Wilkinson worked this first, second and part of the third Alphabet in the 11th year of her age and died May 12, 1835 aged 11 years and four months.” We believe that Ellen picked up her sister’s needle at the letter “N”.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"What a remarkable child Rosa was. Rosa tells us that she completed her sampler on July 20, a Wednesday, in the year 1881.
We have found Rosa in family history records. She was born in July 1877 at Aspley End in Hertfordshire to Charles and Adelaide (née Sears). In the 1881 census, which was compiled in the April, Charles was noted as a butcher and Rosa, at the age of 3 years, as a scholar. One would have expected a three-year-old to have had no occupation recorded. It was unusual for a child of three to attend school. It is also unusual for a child to stitch a sampler at such a young age! Rosa only turned four in the July of 1881."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Jane’s sampler is certainly one that catches the eye! A young Welsh school girl diligently stitched a sampler that is dominated by a decorative vase overflowing with blooms. You can almost smell the fragrant scent of the Cabbage Roses, also known as Rosa Centifolia, “the hundred petal rose.
The original sampler was stitched on Penelope canvas with wool thread and is of Welsh origin. Whilst acquired at auction in Carmarthenshire, there is no Jane Hopkins to be found in this Welsh county in the 1871 census. We believe that the young maker was one of four Janes, who ranged in age from 8 to 13 years, that were born and living in the county of Glamorganshire, Wales."

We believe that the sampler is Welsh, although we have nothing other than instinct to make this assumption. We are fairly certain that it was stitched by a child. The back of the sampler is a tangle of carried threads, ginormous knots and long loose ends!"

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Mary G Ramage is a beautiful and very colourful sampler from the Scottish Borders. Mary was 12 years old when she stitched this sampler in 1891, mainly using cross stitch over 2 threads on approximately 24ct Penelope canvas. She has also included in her sampler a beautiful alphabet stitched using Algerian eyelets over 4 threads, carrying on the tradition of using repeated eyelet stitches to form the letters in an alphabet.
Mary originally stitched her sampler using wool threads which have faded overtime, and some colours on the front of the sampler have changed and become muted and dull. The colour palette was therefore taken from the reverse of the sampler, as these were still so vibrant and fresh. Should Mary happen to gaze down on us while we are stitching, these are the colours she would recognize, and the finished sampler is how Mary intended it to be seen and a true reflection of her own choice of colours and how she used them together.
The verse leads us to think that this may be a Temperance sampler and is taken from Proverbs 20:1 “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging and whoever is deceived by it is not wise.” Maybe she stitched this sampler at Sunday School."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"In the eleventh year of her age, Ann Oliver finished her captivating sampler. The more you look at her needlework, the more there is to enchant. The young schoolgirl had a good eye for colour and design.
It is with regret that we were unable to discover some background information about the sampler and its maker. There are many Ann Olivers to be found in family history records, and we were unable to pinpoint our Ann."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"We have failed to find an Eliza Nisbet in the baptismal records of Scotland, which made us to wonder if her given name was Elizabeth. We have found an Elizabeth being born and living in Edinburgh who was 7 years old when the sampler was completed. Unfortunately, we do not know with any certainty if this is the young maker of this vibrant sampler."
