About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Margaret is one of a pair of sister samplers and was stitched in 1854. Margaret finished her sampler at the age of 10 years in 1854 at Hoghton School. Her sister Charlotte finished her sampler in 1860. Using the clues that the two sisters recorded in cross stitches, we were able to locate the girls in family history records.
Margaret was born on December 23, 1843 and Charlotte in 1848. Their parents were Thomas Entwistle, a farmer and his wife Charlotte (née Whitehead). There were six children born to the couple between 1841 and 1848. Their mother certainly had her hands full!
When Thomas and Charlotte (senior) married on December 23, 1839 in St James, Thomas was an agricultural labourer. In the 1851 census return, Thomas farmed 36 acres at Top o’th Lane in Brindle, Lancashire. The school at Hoghton was some 2.5 miles from the farm.
The Entwistle family prospered and in the 1861 census return, Thomas had a holding of some 115 acres at Top o’th Lane. Thomas was appointed a governor of the Brindle Workhouse in the November of 1866. We have also found a reference to Thomas holding the positions of market inspector and trustee of the Shuttlingfields Charity and funds for the poor. He was a respected member of the community."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Emilie worked her sampler on approximately 24ct linen with wool threads in 1890. The sampler was backed with a piece of cotton fabric and edged and bound with silk ribbon and four silk bows. In the top section of her sampler Emilie diligently stitched her numbers and two sets of the alphabet, one in a simple, clean font and the other in an impressive font. In the bottom section there is a burst of colour as Emilie laid attractive geometric border patterns.
We have given some thought to Emilie’s surname. The Kalwar are an Indian caste historically found in the northern and central India. However, it is also a surname that is found in German family history records. Using Ancestry, we were able to find an Emilie Charlotte Kalwar who was born in Latvia on July 28, 1864 to Adalph and Elwine. Her birth is recorded in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. If this is the correct Emilie, then she was 26 years old when she stitched her sampler."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Working from a palette of 12 colours, Mary Ann stitched a very pretty sampler with wool on loosely woven linen of approximately 26ct. The young girl had a good eye for composition and colour. A meandering border heavily laden with red strawberries surrounds some very pretty motifs. Mary Ann’s chosen sentiment whilst short has great impact, “God is love” (1 John 4:8). It takes centre stage and is worked in a delicate grey green.
We particularly liked the way she arranged the layout of the alphabet using all 26 letters that make up the modern English alphabet today. English is often considered one of the more difficult languages to master due to the incredible amount of inconsistencies in the language. It is not surprising that the development of the modern English alphabet involved several languages, hundreds of years, and a variety of conquerors, missionaries, and scholars. Its history is fascinating and the development of each letter of the alphabet has its own story."

Vickie & Maegan tell us "Mary's sampler has been recreated as best as it could, keeping in mind the deteriorated state of the antique, as well as her sometimes erratic stitches. We enjoy the menagerie at the bottom of her sampler, and like to think the plant at right is a large tomato plant - as it differs significantly from the large flowers elsewhere in Mary's sampler. Sadly without a town name, we were unable to locate our Mary with any degree of certainty."
