"Sarah Spencer is a very common name in England so we were unable to research our Sarah. You will note the reversed “S” in Sarah. It is not unusual for young children to reverse letters when they read and write but Sarah stitched the letter correctly in her surname. She could have simply got it wrong and did not take the time to correct her mistake. However, that does not tally with the neatness of her stitching and the diligence she showed in completing her sampler. We think it could be her way to record that although her name was spelt with an “S” it is pronounced differently like a soft vibrated “Z”."

The sampler is suitable for confident beginners through to advanced needleworkers.

The reproduction of Sarah’s sampler is predominantly worked with cross stitch laid over two threads of linen together with some Algerian eyelets. The verse is worked in cross stitch over one thread of linen.

About the Sampler from the Designer

"The sampler that Sarah stitched when she was 12 years of age in 1834 is most certainly decorative. The young girl showed great diligence in working the intricate border and cartouche surrounding her name. We were strongly drawn to Sarah’s sampler the moment we glimpsed her in an auction catalogue. The red house takes centre stage.

The geometric motifs flanking the verse were another focal point of interest. Although we have seen these on other samplers, they are not common place. Sarah showed great industry with her needle and filled her sampler with many beautiful motifs, she would have been hard pressed to squeeze another motif in.

On March 2, 1822 Sarah Milthorp was baptised in Darrington. This small village and civil parish is located in the heart of the industrial West Riding of Yorkshire. Sarah’s father Thomas Milthorp was an agricultural labourer. Life as an agricultural labourer was hard work. Wages were usually low and housing standards often poor as labourers worked extremely long hours to scrape a living. Thomas’ children would have been expected to work on the land from as young as six years old, particularly at harvest time when everyone lent a hand making hay or harvesting crops."

"This sampler is a postcard from the heart. The sampler, designed and stitched by Nicola as a gift to her husband, has been inspired by samplers in her private collection and conveys several messages to her husband.

The ‘language of flowers’ was a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken.

The English are famous for their roses, and roses are deeply implanted in the English heart. They bring a sweetness of fragance and beauty of colouring, the rose is the queen of an English garden blooming from early summer until the Christmas bells ring out."

Maria Vincenza Laricchia, 1837 is another gorgeous red sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

Maria stitched her sampler mainly with cross stitch over 2 strands of linen together with four-sided stitch.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Maria’s sampler, a trilogy, comes not from England but from the Puglia area of Italy. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy, is an ancient land that is known for its sunny dry climate. It is a land of sea, hills, endless plains, and its amazing coastline on the Adriatic and Ionian Sea.

Maria finished her sampler in 1837. It is possible that she was ten years of age as this number appears to the right of her name. To the left of her name she stitched IO, the Italian for “I”. Maria married Fortunato Giannone, and they lived in Terlizzi – a town found to the west of the seaport of Bari on the Adriatic Sea. Their son Tommaso Giannone was born in 1859."

"What a feast for the eyes! It is such a shame that the child who created this winsome sampler did not include her name. All that is recorded are the initials WJ, PH, and the year 1888.

We sense that the sampler’s maker was industrious and enjoyed stitching her sampler. She used wool on 18ct Penelope canvas. The child certainly had an ebullient sense of colour and a vivid imagination.

The giant pear and rose, completely out of proportion, flank the red house. With smoke billowing from all its chimneys, the viewer is invited into the house through its open side door. A family home is definitely at the heart of this sampler."

Two swans catch the eye. White swans symbolise light, grace, beauty, love, and purity. The swan is an emblem of feminine beauty and softness. Fairy tales feature swans as emblems of devotion, loyalty, and monogamy; this comes from the fact that the swan mates once in a lifetime."

"Mary Eliza McMillan has been in Nicola’s private collection for some time and has been whispering in her ear to be reproduced. Now, as we hunker down in isolation and time has lost any meaning, it seemed the right moment to do so.

Rather than a carefully planned symmetrical sampler, Mary’s needlework is very much a one-off example of a young child’s nonsensical art. Very similar to the scraps of crinkled, paint-smudged paper that can be found in countless homes today proudly displayed on fridge doors.

There is often a variety of wisdom and information to be found on samplers. Some samplers convey a message, others knowledge. Samplers illuminate the lives of their makers when they document moral issues, family histories, personal experiences, and national events."

The samplers stitched by Stuart, Georgian, and Victorian schoolgirls can provide us with a window through which we can catch glimpses of their lives. Recreating their work is a time when we can remember the forgotten women.

So often women disappear into history, their lives unrecorded. Yet in the face of enormous challenges, numerous women have fought their way to the fore and flourished. There are so many women overlooked who defied the norm, excelled, and made lasting impacts on those around them and beyond. Did Mary grow up to be such a woman? Sadly, we will never know.

"Harriet tells us that she was 16 years of age when she finished her sampler in the year 1817. Harriet Godhard was born in 1801 and is most likely the Harriet that married William Yeowell on December 10, 1828 in Clewer, Berkshire, England. Harriet’s husband, William, was a Licenced Victualler. He was the landlord of the public house known as “The Sun” (originally the “Rising Sun”) at 24, Windsor Street, Chertsey, Surrey."

Hannah Campbell Ballypallady 1838 is a beautiful sampler from Hands Across the Sea. 

The sampler has been rated as suitable for intermediate and advanced needleworkers. However, it is not beyond a determined beginner.

The stitches used are cross stitches laid over one and two threads of linen. Hannah also used Algerian eyelets and rice stitch.

"Hannah is most certainly a “bobby dazzler” of a sampler. The sampler catches and holds the eye. The young girl covered every inch of her linen, filling her sampler with carefully stitched motifs. The intricate outer border is one that we have not seen on a sampler before.

Hannah divided her sampler into three sections. The top section dominates with a stunning lozenge- shaped cartouche within which she has worked two alphabets and a set of numerals. The larger font appears on several Quaker samplers.

Hannah records on her sampler that she was from Ballypallady (sic). In Ireland counties are divided into civil parishes and parishes are further divided into townlands. Ballypalady Townland can be found in Ballymartin in the county of Antrim, Northern Ireland."

Jane Fiddes, 1835 is another sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. Jane’s sampler is possibly Irish in origin and is filled to bursting with motifs that vibrate with color. The more you study the sampler the more you will see. 

Jane’s sampler has been rated as suitable for intermediate and advanced needle workers but is not beyond a confident beginner. The sampler is an ideal choice for those who wish to expand their repertoire of stitches.

"On first viewing the sampler, when it was listed in an auction catalogue, we thought that the sampler was Scottish. There are numerous sets of initials scattered throughout the sampler, together with a house with the lawn below executed in Turkey work, and both features are characteristic of Scottish samplers.

When the sampler arrived, in an old but not necessarily original frame, we discovered on the backing board a label that indicated that the sampler had been framed in Dublin, Ireland. Was Jane born in Ireland, did she or one of her descendants marry an Irishman, was the sampler acquired by a collector who took the sampler to Ireland? Regrettably, we shall never know as we cannot link the initials Jane diligently stitched to the Janes that appear in family history records.

This charming sampler has been mainly executed with cross stitch over two threads with a small amount of cross stitch over one thread for Patch the dog. Other stitches used are double running stitch, satin stitch, Algerian eyelet stitch, four-sided stitch, plait stitch and stem stitch. "

The alphabet in upper and lower case, separated by a pretty dividing row, has been stitched in a sweeping and attractive font. The body of the sampler has been laid out in a band format. We particularly like the dividing rows of plump strawberries and the two geometric rows. In the lower section, a four-storey house with many windows and three smoking chimneys takes centre stage. The shrubs that flank the house were an enjoyable stitch.

The sampler is contained within an unusual geometric border. Oh that border! Fanny’s maths was badly off and she ran into major problems. The sampler only has one perfect corner in the bottom left. This indicates to us that she started to stitch her border in this corner. Her border woes have given us a glimpse of Fanny’s personality and have endeared her and her sampler to us. She didn’t unpick and correct but simply improvised, quite creatively!"

About the Sampler

The sampler features a brick house with a lawn stitched in Turkey work / Ghiordes knot that can be found in many Scottish samplers. The stone blocks the young girl used to “build” her house in a checkerboard pattern gives the sampler a distinctive look of its own.

"Maria was an excellent stitcher.  Her execution was precise and accurate.  It amazes me that at the young age of 11 Maria took such great care with her work.  My impression of Maria is that she was a very organized and disciplined girl.  She shows great attention to detail in the way that she matched her top and bottom borders and then also matched her side borders with perfect symmetry.

In the border flowers, she carefully placed each pair of colours so as to not repeat a combination.  She did so similarly in the floral band beneath the verse. I think she was very intentional with her colours and that the results were not just a happy accident.  The balance of greens, reds, and blue against an otherwise neutral palette makes the sampler so visually appealing and alive with colour.  I feel Maria’s sampler is a master class in design, colour placement, and execution."

"Margaret stitched a truly adorable sampler with a rich palette of colours. There is so much to excite your needle. The reverse of the sampler revealed Margaret’s story as told by her great-granddaughter EBG Allison on September 10, 1998.

Margaret or Maggie was twelve years old when she stitched her sampler at the Female School in Ardrossan. This historic harbour town is located in Ayrshire, 30 miles from Glasgow and has sandy beaches with beautiful views over the Firth of Clyde. Shipbuilding was one of Ardrossan’s important industries in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Maggie was born on March 4, 1854 at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland. She was the natural daughter of Margaret Newall, an Irish farm servant. Her father is unknown but could have been Peter Benson, a dock labourer, whom Margaret Newall later married."

Mrs Campbell, Oban 1805 is a Scottish sampler from Hands Across the Sea. 

The sampler has been rated as suitable for needleworkers of all abilities.

The stitches used are cross stitch over 2 threads of linen, with the dedication over 1 thread of linen, Algerian eyelet, and backstitch.

"Mrs Campbell tells us that she lived in Oban. Scotland is divided into two main regions, “Highland” and “Lowland”, with the border between the two areas called the “Highland Line”. The Highlands lie to the west and the Lowlands to the east of the line. All of Argyll, the county in which the Campbell clan have their seat of power, lies within the Highlands.

Oban is located in Argyll and is the unofficial capital of the West Highlands. Oban means “little bay” in the old Gaelic tongue. Nestled between the cliffs and shoreline of the dark blue waters of the Firth of Lorn, the town is fortunate to be protected from the worst Atlantic ravages by the island of Kerrera.

Mrs Campbell’s sampler is as beautiful and as colourful as the place in which she lived. The area has captivated artists, authors, composers, and poets for centuries. "In the 1851 census, Jean Alexander can be found living with her sister Mary. She is listed as a handloom weaver of linen. Handloom weaving was a family business; the trade being handed down through the generations. It is possible that the linen the sampler was stitched on was woven by an Alexander. Whilst the 1851 census contains the last official mention of Jean Alexander, the survival of the sampler she stitched as a child is her lasting legacy. Her sampler is a primary historical source document in its own right."

"At only nine years of age Ann finished her delightful sampler. The young girl chose a delicious palette, she had a good eye selecting very soft yet colourful threads. She diligently worked at her sampler covering her linen with an assortment of motifs including two billy goats. 

The verse she carefully stitched is the first of the nine Beatitudes of Matthew 5:3. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. We do not know if Ann was rich or poor in spirit, with the passing of time all that remains today is her childhood needlework."

"When studying Margaret’s sampler, the eye is drawn to the house with a blue slate roof that is flanked by trees that are heavily laden with pink blooms. Margaret tells us that the house is the Manse of Harlaw. The house that she stitched is very true to the actual building. 

Known today as Harlaw House, this grand Victorian home is set in three acres of grounds and can be found near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, in the North East of Scotland. Today, Inverurie is a prosperous town whose history stretches back well over a thousand years. It lies in a strategically important location on the north bank of the River Don, opposite Port Elphinstone, and on the west bank of the River Urie. As a result of its location it has seen conflict more than once in its history."

Sarah Fletcher 1841 is a beautiful historical sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

"The small mill town of Brighouse stands on the bank of the River Calder in North Yorkshire. In 1753 there were only 55 houses in Brighouse with many local people working in the textile industry from their own homes.

In the 1841 census the Fletcher family can be found living on New Road. In the 1851 census Sarah was in service as a housemaid to a merchant’s family in Wells Close, Hipperholme cum Brighouse. "Jane’s sampler is certainly one that catches the eye! A young Welsh school girl diligently stitched a sampler that is dominated by a decorative vase overflowing with blooms. You can almost smell the fragrant scent of the Cabbage Roses, also known as Rosa Centifolia, “the hundred petal rose. 

The original sampler was stitched on Penelope canvas with wool thread and is of Welsh origin. Whilst acquired at auction in Carmarthenshire, there is no Jane Hopkins to be found in this Welsh county in the 1871 census. We believe that the young maker was one of four Janes, who ranged in age from 8 to 13 years, that were born and living in the county of Glamorganshire, Wales."
