"Annie Morris is the sweetest little sampler. Her dainty border of violets surrounds an alphabet broken up by some pretty dividing rows and a basket of fruit. Annie recorded her age but alas not the year or where she lived. Without this information we were unable to trace our Annie.

Annie used a palette of just five colours to stitch her sampler. On first seeing this sampler, it was her palette that caused us to stop and study her work. We wondered if this little girl was influenced by an older sister, mother, or aunt who was a suffragette."

Jane Hopkins, 1875 is beautiful sampler filled with florals from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. 

The reproduction of Jane’s sampler is predominantly worked with cross stitch laid over two threads of linen; the other stitch used is satin stitch. The sampler is suitable for needleworkers of all abilities.

"Jane’s sampler is certainly one that catches the eye! A young Welsh school girl diligently stitched a sampler that is dominated by a decorative vase overflowing with blooms. You can almost smell the fragrant scent of the Cabbage Roses, also known as Rosa Centifolia, “the hundred petal rose. 

The original sampler was stitched on Penelope canvas with wool thread and is of Welsh origin. Whilst acquired at auction in Carmarthenshire, there is no Jane Hopkins to be found in this Welsh county in the 1871 census. We believe that the young maker was one of four Janes, who ranged in age from 8 to 13 years, that were born and living in the county of Glamorganshire, Wales."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"In the 1851 census, Jean Alexander can be found living with her sister Mary. She is listed as a handloom weaver of linen. Handloom weaving was a family business; the trade being handed down through the generations. It is possible that the linen the sampler was stitched on was woven by an Alexander. Whilst the 1851 census contains the last official mention of Jean Alexander, the survival of the sampler she stitched as a child is her lasting legacy. Her sampler is a primary historical source document in its own right."

Mary Carter 1712 ~ the 2020 Queen of the May is another sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. 

By the time Mary was taught needlework, the need to learn a great variety of stitches and complex traditional patterns had reduced. In the 1700s embroidered costumes and furnishings were replaced by extravagant woven and printed fabrics. In this century the format of English samplers was evolving, reflecting the changing perception of their purpose.

"Mary’s sampler was worked in the traditional bands of the 1600s on a long and narrow piece of linen. She used several reversible stitches, all exquisitely executed with skilled hands. However, we do not believe that her aim was to embroider a reversible sampler. The reverse of her sampler is extremely neat; Mary had pride in her work. There are no knotted starts and all her tail ends are neatly buried but her threads are visibly carried."

"The small mill town of Brighouse stands on the bank of the River Calder in North Yorkshire. In 1753 there were only 55 houses in Brighouse with many local people working in the textile industry from their own homes.

In the 1841 census the Fletcher family can be found living on New Road. In the 1851 census Sarah was in service as a housemaid to a merchant’s family in Wells Close, Hipperholme cum Brighouse. It appears that her father had died by this time, and her mother can be found as the head of the household with Pricilla and two grandchildren. She is noted as a proprietor of houses, indicating a level of financial comfort. Unfortunately, we can find no further mention with a degree of certainty of our Sarah."

"Regrettably, Mary did not record her surname on the sampler she so diligently stitched. The only clues she left behind are the year she finished her sampler “1869” and the number of the bed she occupied “395.” Each orphan has a heart-wrenching story to tell but our little girl, identifying herself by a bed number, has touched me deeply from the first moment I saw her."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Who was this little girl? Jane offers us very few clues in her sampler other than her name and a year.

The General Records Office holds over 260 million records, yet we are unable to find a birth having been registered for Jane Harth!

We do find a Jane Harth born in around the year 1854 recorded in the 1871 census working as one of two servants in the household of George Shepherd, a retired grocer, and his adult son. This Jane was born in Tetney, Lincolnshire. If this was our Jane, then she would have stitched her sampler when she was 14 years old. We would not expect a humble servant to have remained in school until this age.

There is a recorded sampler stitched by Margaret Spender in 1810 that features the same distinctive vase with carnations either side of a tulip. Whilst this is much faded, it is unmistakably the same motif that Jane stitched 58 years later."

Marie Louise Piret 1911 ~ ~ A Little Gem is another cute sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

"Marie Louise’s sampler dates from the beginning of the 20th century and is a simple but beautiful example of what school children were expected to produce — work of a very high standard that taught them a skill which would be useful to them as adults, either in their home or to earn a living. Stitching alphabets prepared the young girls to monogram their household linen with their initials.

Whilst the sampler was acquired in England, we believe that the sampler was most probably stitched in France, Belgium, or Germany. Regrettably, we have been unable to find Marie Louise in family history records. We have been hampered by our lack of the Dutch, French, and German language. The surname of Piret is most commonly found in Belgium."

Amanda Malviney Brown, 1844 is beautiful sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

The sampler is worked with cross stitched over two threads of linen and some Algerian eyelets. It has been rated suitable for all levels of abilities.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"It was so nice to see the name of Amanda on a sampler from the first half of the 19^th century, and what a pretty sampler this 10-year-old stitched. Amanda is a Latin name meaning “lovable” or “worthy of love.” Whilst it was a popular literary name in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is not often seen on samplers from the 1800s.

Amanda was born on April 25, 1834 in Austonley, a small hamlet on the outskirts of the town of Holmfirth, Yorkshire. This was a beautiful rural area of rolling hills, grassland, and woods, but in the 1770s the first spinning jenny was introduced to Holmfirth and by the 1850s textile mills had sprung up by the river valleys. Holmfirth rapidly expanded in the 1800s due to the growing cloth trade and the production of stone and slates from the surrounding quarries. The peaceful, rural area was gone forever as around 60 textile mills were built, employing hundreds of men, women, and children. Today, it is the renowned location of the British TV classic Last of the Summer Wine and as the home of another British tradition, Bamforth’s saucy seaside postcards!"

Mary Wigglesworth, 1812 is another beautiful historical sampler from Hands Across the Sea. 

The sampler has been rated as suitable for needleworkers of all abilities.

The original sampler was stitched with cross stitch over two threads of linen with the exception of the word “heart” which is worked in cross stitch over one thread.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Mary was the daughter of Jonathan and Mary Holmes and was baptised on February 24, 1754 in Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire. She was the second daughter to have been named Mary, the first having died before her first birthday. At the age of 10, Mary lost her mother, we suspect in childbirth. Jonathan remarried two years later.

Mary married William Wigglesworth on November 24, 1782 at St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Hampsthwaite. Mary and William were cousins, the Wigglesworths and Holmes’ families having intermarried through earlier generations. The families were connected with Padside Hall, Thornthwaite in the parish of Hampsthwaite.

We do not know if Mary and William had children. They settled in Addingham, a village a short distance from Thornthwaite."

Jane Fiddes, 1835 is another sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. Jane’s sampler is possibly Irish in origin and is filled to bursting with motifs that vibrate with color. The more you study the sampler the more you will see.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"On first viewing the sampler, when it was listed in an auction catalogue, we thought that the sampler was Scottish. There are numerous sets of initials scattered throughout the sampler, together with a house with the lawn below executed in Turkey work, and both features are characteristic of Scottish samplers.

When the sampler arrived, in an old but not necessarily original frame, we discovered on the backing board a label that indicated that the sampler had been framed in Dublin, Ireland. Was Jane born in Ireland, did she or one of her descendants marry an Irishman, was the sampler acquired by a collector who took the sampler to Ireland? Regrettably, we shall never know as we cannot link the initials Jane diligently stitched to the Janes that appear in family history records.

This charming sampler has been mainly executed with cross stitch over two threads with a small amount of cross stitch over one thread for Patch the dog. Other stitches used are double running stitch, satin stitch, Algerian eyelet stitch, four-sided stitch, plait stitch and stem stitch. "

Queen of the May Sarah Reymes ,1770 is the 2022 Queen of the May sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. 

This sampler is mostly worked with cross stitch laid over two threads of linen. The verse is worked in cross stitch over one thread of linen. Sarah also used Algerian eyelets over two and four threads, and Irish stitch.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"S Reymes 1770 is a “bobby dazzler” of a sampler. A glorious floral border surrounds decorative rows of vines laden with flowers, a band of Irish stitch (also known as Florentine and flame stitch), rows of alphabets worked both in cross stitch and eyelet stitch. The verse is worked with red silk and a small black dog sits incongruously atop a flower head. The sampler is reminiscent of the samplers stitched by Abigail Dingle in 1762 and Jane Brunton in 1763. We suspect that the three samplers were worked under the same needlework teacher in Norwich.

On the reverse of Sarah’s sampler it is recorded that this was “Mrs Lungley’s work”. From family history records we know that Sarah was 11 years old when she finished her sampler. She was born on Tuesday, July 17 in the year 1759 in Norwich in the county of Norfolk. She was named after a sister who was born and died in 1755. Sarah’s baptism on August 6 was recorded in the non-conformist records for the Old Meeting in Norwich."

Mary Wigglesworth, 1812 is another beautiful historical sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

"Maria’s sampler, a trilogy, comes not from England but from the Puglia area of Italy. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy, is an ancient land that is known for its sunny dry climate. It is a land of sea, hills, endless plains, and its amazing coastline on the Adriatic and Ionian Sea.

Maria finished her sampler in 1837. It is possible that she was ten years of age as this number appears to the right of her name. To the left of her name she stitched IO, the Italian for “I”. Maria married Fortunato Giannone, and they lived in Terlizzi – a town found to the west of the seaport of Bari on the Adriatic Sea. Their son Tommaso Giannone was born in 1859."

"At only nine years of age Ann finished her delightful sampler. The young girl chose a delicious palette, she had a good eye selecting very soft yet colourful threads. She diligently worked at her sampler covering her linen with an assortment of motifs including two billy goats. 

The verse she carefully stitched is the first of the nine Beatitudes of Matthew 5:3. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. We do not know if Ann was rich or poor in spirit, with the passing of time all that remains today is her childhood needlework."

Jessie Watson 1816, is another sweet sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

"This delightful sampler stitched on 24ct linen with wool by Jessie Watson charmed us from the first glance. Unfortunately, Jessie did not include a date or a location on her sampler, so we have not been able to identify her in family history records. However, we do know of another sampler that has an almost identical house and heart that was stitched in 1816.

Sometimes when researching a sampler, we have to look to the motifs for clues as to the identity of its young maker. We believe Jessie’s sampler to be Scottish."
