Hannah Green 1826 is a captivating sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

Hannah executed her sampler predominantly with cross stitches laid over two threads of linen; only the verse, parts of the butterflies, and the flocks of birds have been worked in cross stitch over one thread of linen. Hannah also used rice and satin stitch.

 The sampler is suitable for needleworkers of all levels of ability.

About the Sampler from the Designer

"On March 1, in the year of our Lord 1826, Hannah Green completed her sampler at the age of 12 years. It is a truly stunning sampler. The composition of this sampler is what captures the viewer’s eye, holds their attention, and controls the movement of the eye. Strong artistic compositions are vital to the success of a piece of art (yes schoolgirl samplers are art).

I have spent many hours studying Hannah’s sampler – her work draws you in. We can be affected by a beautiful design without understanding why. There is something about Hannah’s sampler that creates a sense of gentle harmony. The colours that Hannah used in her sampler are rich and vibrant, yet no one hue dominates; there is harmony and balance."

Emilie Kalwar 1890 is an delightful geometric historical sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Emilie worked her sampler on approximately 24ct linen with wool threads in 1890. The sampler was backed with a piece of cotton fabric and edged and bound with silk ribbon and four silk bows. In the top section of her sampler Emilie diligently stitched her numbers and two sets of the alphabet, one in a simple, clean font and the other in an impressive font. In the bottom section there is a burst of colour as Emilie laid attractive geometric border patterns.

We have given some thought to Emilie’s surname. The Kalwar are an Indian caste historically found in the northern and central India. However, it is also a surname that is found in German family history records. Using Ancestry, we were able to find an Emilie Charlotte Kalwar who was born in Latvia on July 28, 1864 to Adalph and Elwine. Her birth is recorded in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. If this is the correct Emilie, then she was 26 years old when she stitched her sampler."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Emily Ann finished her sampler in the year 1892 when she was 11 years old. She recorded that she lived in Weaverthorpe, a village in the south-eastern corner of North Yorkshire. Emily was born in 1881 to George Foster, a farm labourer, and his wife Hannah Summersgill."

Jessie Watson 1816, is another sweet sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

"This delightful sampler stitched on 24ct linen with wool by Jessie Watson charmed us from the first glance. Unfortunately, Jessie did not include a date or a location on her sampler, so we have not been able to identify her in family history records. However, we do know of another sampler that has an almost identical house and heart that was stitched in 1816.

Sometimes when researching a sampler, we have to look to the motifs for clues as to the identity of its young maker. We believe Jessie’s sampler to be Scottish."

Ann Borrett, 1646 is another little gem sampler from Hands Across the Sea. Ann’s beautiful band sampler is highly decorative and even though  she “rovght” her sampler three hundred and seventy-four years ago, the colours are still intense today.

"The first two bands of Ann’s sampler also appear in the band sampler stitched by Jeane Vally in 1646. Jeane’s sampler is in the Goodhart Collection at Montecute House and is featured in the book “The Goodhart Collection” on page 88.

Band samplers were the traditional “test pieces” worked by young girls. Ann’s sampler or “sam cloth” is a visual catalogue of stitches and comprises of neat rows of patterns that are suitable for repeating motifs to adorn garments and household items. The alphabet at the bottom of Ann’s sampler and her inscription demonstrate her ability to mark household linen."

Ellen Barbour, 1895 "Home Sweet Home" is a lovely small sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Amelia has left us some clues in her sampler which she completed in 1863. She attended Berkswell School. The village of Berkswell is situated 7 miles West of Coventry City centre.

Amelia’s birth was registered in the first quarter of the year 1852. We cannot find her baptismal records, only the entry in the civil registration of births. Amelia appears in the 1861 census living at Cornets End Lane, Meriden, Berkswell. Her father, Thomas Batchelor, had died in 1860. Her mother, Ann (née Bond), is noted as a widow and the occupier of two acres of land. Amelia’s brother William, aged 11 years, was working as a ploughboy. Ann died in 1873.

Amelia stitched her sampler between 10 to 11 years of age, almost certainly under the guidance of her teacher at Berkswell School. Amelia probably had to leave school shortly after this to help contribute to the family income."

"Esther’s beautiful work has enchanted Nicola from her first glimpse of the sampler. The original sampler was worked in wool on approximately 24ct Penelope canvas. Esther had a wonderful eye for colour, her chosen palette included pink, mauve, apricot, raspberry, salmon, garnet, and coral. A delicious combination that makes the fingers itch to stitch.

Esther recorded that she completed her sampler in the 12^th year of her age in 1847. Our initial search of family history records found two possible Esthers. However, after a more thorough investigation, neither of the girls’ years of birth quite fitted our Esther, who would have been born in either 1834 or 1835."

Ann Oliver, 1845 is another beautiful sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers. 

The project has been stitched using cross stitch over two threads with the exception of the verse which has been worked in cross stitched over one thread.

"The original sampler was stitched in wool, and the background was entirely stitched in cross stitch. We have not filled in the background, instead we used a linen of a similar colour to the colour used by the child.

We believe that the sampler is Welsh, although we have nothing other than instinct to make this assumption. We are fairly certain that it was stitched by a child. The back of the sampler is a tangle of carried threads, ginormous knots and long loose ends!"

"Marion’s charming sampler was finished on April 6, 1866 when she was twelve years old. The young girl’s sampler was worked with wool on a ground of approximately 24ct. Contained within a border of plump red strawberries is a delightful cottage flanked by two pine trees with a lawn of luscious green grass. You could imagine the heroine of a fairy tale stumbling across this cottage in a forest glade."

The sampler is executed in cross stitch over two threads and can be worked on Aida or linen. It is rated suitable for beginners through to advanced needleworkers.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Ann covered every inch of her fabric and, in doing so, showed in the top section that she was more than competent in marking linen. The bottom section of her sampler contains a very chirpy bird, a butterfly, two dogs, and two shrubs heavily laden with flowers.

Ann Hutton Rathmell was born in Horsforth, Yorkshire on Saturday, August 7, 1841. She was baptised on Sunday, October 17 in Rawdon St Peter, an Anglican church. Her parents were Joseph Rathmell, a farmer, and his wife Mary, née Hutton. Ann was the first of eight children born to the couple. The family farmed Whetstone Farm in Horsforth.

Life was probably very hard on a farm in Yorkshire in the 1800s. Ann never married or was blessed with children. We hope that she lived a happy life. She died on December 24, 1900."

Ann Thomas, 1854 is another delightful Welsh sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

"We believe that Eleanor was born in Cumbria, the most north-western county in England, bordering onto Scotland. We have found two possible Eleanors in the family history records. One baptised on August 29, 1824 in Saint Bridget Beckernet and the other baptised on July 26, 1823 at Saint Bees. It is possible that the two Eleanors were cousins, as Beckernet and Saint Bees are situated less than five miles apart."

"Mary may have been educated at home by a governess or attended a local fee-paying school or even a boarding school. Whether she was taught by a governess or a school mistress, needlework would have played a big part in her education. It was one of the necessary accomplishments a young lady was required to master. It was considered one of the “female arts”, which were important in the preparation for marrying “well” and essential domestic skills needed by the mistress of a household.  At a time when everything was hand-sewn, sewing skills were essential regardless of the family’s financial standing.

Mary’s sampler demonstrates her diligence, and the neat stitching and attention to detail are indicative of her pride and enjoyment in her work. We are fortunate that Mary’s sampler was treasured, first by her and her parents and then by her descendants. Their care of a child’s needlework has ensured that Mary is remembered and celebrated today."

"In the 1851 census, Jean Alexander can be found living with her sister Mary. She is listed as a handloom weaver of linen. Handloom weaving was a family business; the trade being handed down through the generations. It is possible that the linen the sampler was stitched on was woven by an Alexander. Whilst the 1851 census contains the last official mention of Jean Alexander, the survival of the sampler she stitched as a child is her lasting legacy. Her sampler is a primary historical source document in its own right."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

“Anna Sophia was 13 years old when she stitched her sampler. At age 22, in 1880, she can be found living at 20 Sussex Gardens, Hyde Park, London and marrying Frederick Charles Bishop. Anna Sophia and Frederick, together with their 3-month-old daughter Alice Maria, were recorded in the 1881 census as living at 149 Cromwell Road, Kensington. Frederick, at only 25, is listed as a butler, a prestigious role within the domestic servants’ hierarchy for one so young.

Anna Sophia and Frederick were to have one more child, a son called Charles Frederick, born in 1883. Anna Sophia passed away in 1884 aged just 26. She died in Norfolk, possibly she and the children had returned to her parents whilst ill.

The 1891 census finds Frederick in Chelsea, London, as the butler to the very wealthy Francis William Lowther and in charge of a large household staff."

Hannah Campbell Ballypallady 1838 is a beautiful sampler from Hands Across the Sea. 

The sampler has been rated as suitable for intermediate and advanced needleworkers. However, it is not beyond a determined beginner.

The stitches used are cross stitches laid over one and two threads of linen. Hannah also used Algerian eyelets and rice stitch.

"Sophia recorded on her sampler “Nailsea 1804”. Whilst there is no record of a Quaker school in Nailsea, it is possible that Sophia was a pupil boarding at Sidcot and recorded “Nailsea” as the location of her home rather than that of the school.

Sophia married Mark May, a farmer, on April 8, 1816. Mary, their first of eight children, was baptised the following February. The family can be found in the census returns at Mays Green in the village of Puxton. Mark died in 1867 and Sophia two years later in 1869, just before her 80^th birthday."

"Matilda showed great diligence and industry with her needle. The verse she chose for her sampler “The Lord my pasture shall prepare and feed me with a shepherd’s care” is the first verse of the hymn “The Good Shepherd” written by Joseph Addison.

The dominant motif in Matilda’s sampler is the magnificent Temple of Fame nestled between two fruiting trees and guarded by two red lions. The lions symbolise strength, courage, dignity, and pride. Two angels with trumpets signifying that they are the voice of God hover either side of the temple."
