About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"When studying Margaret’s sampler, the eye is drawn to the house with a blue slate roof that is flanked by trees that are heavily laden with pink blooms. Margaret tells us that the house is the Manse of Harlaw. The house that she stitched is very true to the actual building. 

Known today as Harlaw House, this grand Victorian home is set in three acres of grounds and can be found near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, in the North East of Scotland. Today, Inverurie is a prosperous town whose history stretches back well over a thousand years. It lies in a strategically important location on the north bank of the River Don, opposite Port Elphinstone, and on the west bank of the River Urie. As a result of its location it has seen conflict more than once in its history."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Emily Ann Greenaway is a truly beautiful sampler with a decorative multi-coloured border which encloses some very sweet animals and motifs. The colour palette has been taken from the front of the sampler as these have mellowed into lovely soft colours. The eye is drawn to the colourful basket of fruit in the centre, and it is here that Emily dates her sampler to 1884. On either side are a deer and an extremely cute, realistic little rabbit.

Emily places her sampler in Sibertswold, which is a village situated about 6 miles from the port city of Dover, Kent. Emily Ann Greenaway was born on the 16th of October 1864 in Sibertswold, Kent. This makes her around 20 years old when she stitched her sampler in 1884. The majority of samplers were stitched by younger girls, so it is interesting that she was older. Emily had a very long life. She died on the 22nd of February 1958 at the grand old age of 95 years in Chatham and is also buried at Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham, Kent. She would have witnessed many changes in her life and would have had to adapt. I have a feeling that she was a strong and kind woman, with a sense of duty and care towards her family, providing a loving home when one was needed."

"Boulogne is a city and a major fishing port on the north coast of France. It is possible that Elizabeth stitched her primer when her family were holidaying in Boulogne, although the month of November may indicate a lengthy stay rather than a summer sojourn.

Boulogne-sur-Mer housed a large British population of around 3,000 in the mid-1800s. Although there were migrant workers there, Boulogne’s British population was composed largely of genteel, middle-class residents, some of them in debt, many with servants.

We wonder if Elizabeth kept the promise she so diligently stitched.'

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Our eyes were particularly drawn both to the bottom section with its unusual stitch formation and Edna’s middle name. The Russian name Verenia is an uncommon name in England and means faithful, loyal, and true.

Edna gave us many clues to follow in her sampler. She finished her sampler on Friday, April 18 in 1884 when she was 10 years old. The sampler was worked as part of her education in Ripponden at Stones School. Ripponden is in Yorkshire, and it is in this great northern country that we found Edna. She was one of five children born to John Nichol and his wife Elizabeth, née Berry, in Soyland in the year 1873. In the 1881 census return the family can be found living at 5 Hey Houses in Soyland, Yorkshire. John was recorded as a corn agent."

Mary Hillier, 1867 is a gorgeous red sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

"Mary was born on 3 September 1852 in Newton, Somerset, England. Her parents were Thomas Hillier, a labourer, and Elizabeth. On 18 August 1858 at 7 o’clock, Thomas, who was the foreman of a gang of workmen who were working on the Great Western Railway line between Bath and Twerton, met with an accident. As a train of empty carriages approached the workmen, in moving away from the line, Thomas slipped, and both of his feet went under the passing train and were “dreadfully crushed”. He was taken to hospital, and both his feet were amputated. A newspaper report noted that he was expected to recover. However, the accident proved to be fatal, and he died on 27 September. Within a year, Mary’s mother, died of pneumonia at the County Lunatic Asylum at Wells."

"Amelia has left us some clues in her sampler which she completed in 1863. She attended Berkswell School. The village of Berkswell is situated 7 miles West of Coventry City centre.

Amelia’s birth was registered in the first quarter of the year 1852. We cannot find her baptismal records, only the entry in the civil registration of births. Amelia appears in the 1861 census living at Cornets End Lane, Meriden, Berkswell. Her father, Thomas Batchelor, had died in 1860. Her mother, Ann (née Bond), is noted as a widow and the occupier of two acres of land. Amelia’s brother William, aged 11 years, was working as a ploughboy. Ann died in 1873.

Amelia stitched her sampler between 10 to 11 years of age, almost certainly under the guidance of her teacher at Berkswell School. Amelia probably had to leave school shortly after this to help contribute to the family income."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Ellen was baptised on April 19, 1885 at Burgh Castle, Norfolk. Her parents were James, a seaman, and his wife Clare. Ellen recorded on her sampler that she finished her sampler in the January of 1895 in Belton.

Ellen married Alfred George Edwards, an engine cleaner, on December 19, 1902 at the age of 18. In the 1911 census return Alfred was working as a railway goods porter. Ellen and Alfred had had 4 children with three boys living (a fifth son was born after the census). The family had relocated to Yorkshire and were living at 72 Mount Street, Henley Grove, Rotherham. They remained in Rotherham, where Alfred and Ellen both died in 1958. Ellen was 72 years of age.

We very much hope that the home Ellen made for herself and her family was indeed “Home Sweet Home”."

Amelia Bachelor 1863 is another delightful small sampler from Hands Across the Sea Samplers.

"Mary  sweet sampler is a delightful example of a young child’s artwork. Mary tells us that she was aged 9 years when she stitched her sampler. She has given no year or location, however, we believe that the sampler is English and was stitched in the mid 1800’s.

An imposing building first catches the eye. Maybe this was a church run school or orphanage as the roof is topped by a cross. Above hovers two trumpeting angels signifying the word of God and reinforcing our first thought that the building is connected in some way to a church institution. The bottom section of the sampler is full of out of proportion trees, potted roses and a basket of fruit."

"S Reymes 1770 is a “bobby dazzler” of a sampler. A glorious floral border surrounds decorative rows of vines laden with flowers, a band of Irish stitch (also known as Florentine and flame stitch), rows of alphabets worked both in cross stitch and eyelet stitch. The dates on the two samplers are the date of birth for Emma and Martin; Emma having been born on July 26, 1869 and Martin on October 16, 1870. The samplers were stitched in the year 1880 when Emma was 11 years and Martin 10 years old.

Emma and Martin’s parents were Noah Eli Hubbard, a master mariner, and his wife Emma Christiana (née Callow). The family lived in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk."

"The small mill town of Brighouse stands on the bank of the River Calder in North Yorkshire. In 1753 there were only 55 houses in Brighouse with many local people working in the textile industry from their own homes.

In the 1841 census the Fletcher family can be found living on New Road. In the 1851 census Sarah was in service as a housemaid to a merchant’s family in Wells Close, Hipperholme cum Brighouse. It appears that her father had died by this time, and her mother can be found as the head of the household with Pricilla and two grandchildren. She is noted as a proprietor of houses, indicating a level of financial comfort. Unfortunately, we can find no further mention with a degree of certainty of our Sarah."

Esther had a wonderful eye for colour, her chosen palette included pink, mauve, apricot, raspberry, salmon, garnet, and coral. A delicious combination that makes the fingers itch to stitch.

Esther recorded that she completed her sampler in the 12^th year of her age in 1847. Our initial search of family history records found two possible Esthers. However, after a more thorough investigation, neither of the girls’ years of birth quite fitted our Esther, who would have been born in either 1834 or 1835."

"Mrs Campbell tells us that she lived in Oban. Scotland is divided into two main regions, “Highland” and “Lowland”, with the border between the two areas called the “Highland Line”. The Highlands lie to the west and the Lowlands to the east of the line. All of Argyll, the county in which the Campbell clan have their seat of power, lies within the Highlands.

Oban is located in Argyll and is the unofficial capital of the West Highlands. Oban means “little bay” in the old Gaelic tongue. Nestled between the cliffs and shoreline of the dark blue waters of the Firth of Lorn, the town is fortunate to be protected from the worst Atlantic ravages by the island of Kerrera.

Mrs Campbell’s sampler is as beautiful and as colourful as the place in which she lived. The area has captivated artists, authors, composers, and poets for centuries. The original sampler was stitched with cross stitch over two threads of linen with the exception of the word “heart” which is worked in cross stitch over one thread.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Mary was the daughter of Jonathan and Mary Holmes and was baptised on February 24, 1754 in Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire. She was the second daughter to have been named Mary, the first having died before her first birthday. At the age of 10, Mary lost her mother, we suspect in childbirth. Jonathan remarried two years later.

Mary married William Wigglesworth on November 24, 1782 at St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Hampsthwaite. Mary and William were cousins, the Wigglesworths and Holmes’ families having intermarried through earlier generations. The families were connected with Padside Hall, Thornthwaite in the parish of Hampsthwaite.

We do not know if Mary and William had children. They settled in Addingham, a village a short distance from Thornthwaite."
