About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

"Ruth’s sampler had so many similarities to Isabella’s that there had to be a connection. We were able to make contact with one of Ruth’s descendants, a medieval archivist who had some information on the family’s history. Ruth was born in Plaistow, London, on August 16, 1815 to Joseph Bates and Esther Bates, née Cartwright."

Magdalena Outhwaite 1833 is a beautiful sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

 

Magdalena had a good eye for colour and composition; her sampler is visually very pleasing. There are some very pretty motifs to delight your needle.

The sampler is worked mainly in cross stitch over two threads of linen. Magdalena’s name, age, and the year are worked in cross stitch over one thread of linen. The sampler is suitable for needleworkers of all levels of ability.

    About the Sampler from the Designer

    "Magdalena was born in 1820 in Sutton in Holderness, Yorkshire to George and Mary Outhwaite. The rural village is now a suburb of the city of Hull and known as Sutton on Hull. Magdalena was baptised on May 28 of that year. George died in 1827 and life was no doubt hard for his widow raising her five children.

    By the time Magdalene worked her sampler she had lost her father and a sister. The verse and aphorisms that she so diligently stitched would have brought her comfort when there was much to fear.

    Magdalena’s life was one of domestic service. In the census returns between the years 1841 to 1881 she is recorded as a domestic servant, a cook, and a housekeeper. She never married and in the 1891 census she can be found as an elderly maiden aunt in the household of her niece. She died shortly after the 1891 census return.

    We hope that Magdalena was beloved and that, throughout the many hardships she faced, her confidence was strong."

      About the Sampler from the Designer

      This eighteenth century English sampler exhibits some stylistic motifs popularized in the seventeenth century alongside the more contemporary fashions of the year 1777 as seen in the style of the figures’ clothing.

      It is executed in a good variety of stitches including, mostly the ubiquitous cross stitch, as well as double running stitch, eyelets, queen, back, counted satin and petit point. An elegantly dressed lady holding a fan and wearing a sumptuous green gown appears to acknowledge a gentleman on the other side of the verse who is presenting a bouquet of flowers to her, leaning on his walking stick with his black dog at his feet. The verses are from Psalms 13, 14 and 15. Below each figure a primitive heraldic crowned lion is executed in back stitch.

      On 40 count linen the reproduction sampler will be almost the same size as the original: 10″ x 13-1/2″

      About the Sampler from the Designer

      Charlotte’s Sampler uses a pallet, evoking the colours of an English Autumn. A border of flowers encases a central house flanked by two identical smaller houses, sitting halfway across the sampler, separating the verse in the top half and a selection of typical motifs in the bottom.

       The verse is the third verse of a Christian hymn,  “And now, my soul, another year” written in 1720 by Simon Browne (1860-1732). The bottom half includes the motifs of owls, peacocks, birds, flowers, crowns and hearts, flanking a central basket of flowers.

      Charlotte was born in 1825 in the small market town of Tring, Hertfordshire, about 30 miles to the north of London.  This was also the birthplace of John Washington, the great-grandfather of President of USA, George Washington.

      Her life saw the beginning of the great age of  Victoria and all the social and industrial changes that that would bring.

      The booklet is produced in full colour with both colour and symbol blocks and there is a page overlap of 5 rows for ease of use when changing pages. The model was stitched in AVAS silks on 40ct Zweigart linen in Summer Khaki and there are thread legends for both AVAS and DMC conversions and a full biography of Charlotte and her family.

        Elizabeth finished her stunning sampler on Wednesday, February 1, in the year 1854. The sampler would have been worked as part of her education. It would have taken many hours to complete and is an amazing achievement. A bobby dazzler of a sampler! Elizabeth created a cohesive, engaging, and visually balanced sampler. The sampler draws the viewer’s eye.

        Regrettably, Elizabeth did not record her age or a location on her sampler; without this information we could not identify our Elizabeth as there were numerous girls of that name born in the 1840s. We do know that Elizabeth was born in the very early years of the Victorian era. This was a time of strict social structure, traditional gender roles, and rigid expectations, particularly for women and young girls. A Victorian girl’s life was largely shaped by her family’s social class, but across all classes, she was expected to be modest, obedient, and well-mannered. Her upbringing revolved around domestic skills, education, and preparation for marriage and motherhood.

        While wealthy girls were groomed for lives of refinement and marriage, working-class girls often faced hard labour and limited opportunities. Regardless of status, most Victorian girls grew up in a world that emphasised obedience, modesty, and domestic skills over personal ambition or independence. Though their experiences varied, they all lived under the rigid expectations of a society that saw their primary role as future wives and mothers."

          About the Sampler from the Designer

          This is a reproduction of a Quaker sampler made in Chester County, Pennsylvania consisting of alphabets, numerals, ligatures* and lineal patterns executed in a variety of stitches.  The uppermost border with the dangling central flower is often seen on American Quaker samplers of this period (see “Rebecca Nut” in The Scarlet Letter collection).

          Stitches used include cross, petit point, counted satin, queen, eyelet and four-sided making this a true exercise in needlework skills for a young girl of eleven years old.

          On 30/32 count linen the reproduction sampler will most closely approximate the size of the original: 8-1/2″ x 11-1/2″ (the original is 10″ x 12″ stitched on homespun linen with vegetable dyed silk floss).

          The project is recommended for any level of skill and is a lovely small way to learn a variety of stitches in an historic context.

          *Ligatures are characters consisting of one or more joined letters and are often seen on Quaker samplers.
