About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"The small mill town of Brighouse stands on the bank of the River Calder in North Yorkshire. In 1753 there were only 55 houses in Brighouse with many local people working in the textile industry from their own homes.
In the 1841 census the Fletcher family can be found living on New Road. In the 1851 census Sarah was in service as a housemaid to a merchant’s family in Wells Close, Hipperholme cum Brighouse. It appears that her father had died by this time, and her mother can be found as the head of the household with Pricilla and two grandchildren. She is noted as a proprietor of houses, indicating a level of financial comfort. Unfortunately, we can find no further mention with a degree of certainty of our Sarah."

Professional industrial bent tailor scissors. These scissors are heavy and have weights on either side where the blades attach in order to create a balance helping the tailor to cut vertically through the cloth.
When cutting, the tailor can slide the shears along the board without bearing any weight which improves stability and accuracy. The heavy weight also reduces the cutting load.
Use to cut medium to heavy duty fabrics or upholstery
Reduces hand fatigue when cutting
Weighted scissors and long blade help to improve stability and accuracy and encourages flow in one move without having to open your scissors halfway through
Handy to use when cutting around curves

This beautiful little pair of scissors were re-interpreted from an original hand-forged pair dating from the 1830's. Before the Industrial Revolution this kind of scissor was probably made bespoke by a Cutler, and the design is not as refined as the later Victorian models with much more lacy, thinner curves with slender blades.
Made in the Gothic Revival style, craftsmen at the time were influenced by medieval motifs and flourishes in earlier forms seen in cathedrals. A reaction to Neoclassicism, the style can also be found in other decorative arts such as porcelain, crystal, clock cases, furniture and textiles. Some of those Gothic ornamental details are delicately etched into the handles of these scissors.
This will make a lovely addition to a period workbox display, or sewing basket.
