About the Sampler from the Designer
"This English sampler retained its vibrant original color when I acquired it, having been conserved and de-accessioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the ground suffered many small holes, the needlework itself was still in brilliant condition. It features bold- original!- primary colors in its four sided floral border, verses, and scene with a lovely but asymmetrical brick house with dormer windows, flanked by trees. The verses are:
Oh may once more the happy Age appear When words were Artless and the Soul sincere When Gold and Grander were unenvy’d things And Crowns less coveted than Groves and Springs
Fragrant the Rose is but it fades in time. The Violet Sweet but quickly Past the Prime White Lilies hang their Heads and soon decay And Whiter Snow in Minutes Melts away Such and So With’ring Are our early Joys Which Time or Sickness speedily destroy Mary Hood Finished This Work October the 4 1768"
Au Ver À Soie® Soie 100/3, is a three ply highly twisted spun silk. Made in France by the Au Ver a Soie company, whose quality has remained steadfast since 1820.
Use for embroidery, counted thread, canvas work, fine sewing, machine and long-arm quilting
Thread thickness is slightly finer than a single ply of Soie d’Alger.
Glides nicely through linen.
Most linen stitchers prefer to use this on 37, 38, 45 and 53/63 count linens Top and bottom of spool lift for securing thread in place.
4 plies of Soie 100/3 will cover 18 count canvas in tent stitch. Try it for a different looking texture!
Soie 1003 provides sharp, crisp delineation of your stitches for canvas and linen applications. Vary the number of plies for outlining in one shade darker to add depth or raised effect

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Sarah Spencer is a very common name in England so we were unable to research our Sarah. You will note the reversed “S” in Sarah. It is not unusual for young children to reverse letters when they read and write but Sarah stitched the letter correctly in her surname. She could have simply got it wrong and did not take the time to correct her mistake. However, that does not tally with the neatness of her stitching and the diligence she showed in completing her sampler. We think it could be her way to record that although her name was spelt with an “S” it is pronounced differently like a soft vibrated “Z”."
