About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"It was so nice to see the name of Amanda on a sampler from the first half of the 19th century, and what a pretty sampler this 10-year-old stitched. Amanda is a Latin name meaning “lovable” or “worthy of love.” Whilst it was a popular literary name in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is not often seen on samplers from the 1800s.
Amanda was born on April 25, 1834 in Austonley, a small hamlet on the outskirts of the town of Holmfirth, Yorkshire. This was a beautiful rural area of rolling hills, grassland, and woods, but in the 1770s the first spinning jenny was introduced to Holmfirth and by the 1850s textile mills had sprung up by the river valleys. Holmfirth rapidly expanded in the 1800s due to the growing cloth trade and the production of stone and slates from the surrounding quarries. The peaceful, rural area was gone forever as around 60 textile mills were built, employing hundreds of men, women, and children. Today, it is the renowned location of the British TV classic Last of the Summer Wine and as the home of another British tradition, Bamforth’s saucy seaside postcards!"

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"The sampler was most probably stitched in the latter decades of the 1800s.
The verse so diligently stitched on the sampler was written by Thomas Moore, an Irish poet, satirist, composer, and political propagandist. He was a close friend of Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"This delightful sampler stitched on 24ct linen with wool by Jessie Watson charmed us from the first glance. Unfortunately, Jessie did not include a date or a location on her sampler, so we have not been able to identify her in family history records. However, we do know of another sampler that has an almost identical house and heart that was stitched in 1816.
Sometimes when researching a sampler, we have to look to the motifs for clues as to the identity of its young maker. We believe Jessie’s sampler to be Scottish."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
“The longest road out is the shortest road home”
Who can resist a red house sampler? Jane’s colourful sampler glows with good cheer. Contained within a stylised red carnation border is a delightful scene of a sturdy redbrick house surrounded by urns of fruit, four birds and auriculas. The parkland abounds with deer, two small dogs and an aristocratic cat with tail held high. The three chimneys, with smoke billowing, create a feeling of “home is where the hearth is” and adds to the overall feeling of warmth the sampler conveys.
Jane stitched the number four in 1840 backwards. Writing numbers backwards (mirror-writing) is not unusual for young children, it is how their brain processes what they see.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Mary Woodward is certainly the smallest sampler Hands Across the Sea Samplers have reproduced, yet she has oodles of appeal and all the elements, in miniature, of a school girl sampler.
A strawberry border undulates around an array of baskets filled with pretty flowers; butterflies and birds complete the charming scene. The motifs and colours Mary chose to stitch her sampler with work in harmony, recreating the froth of planting and rainbow of colours we see in a quintessential English cottage garden."
Hands Across the Sea - Queen of the May Sarah Reymes ,1770 ~ Soie 1003 Thread Kit

***Please note, this item is excluded from any discounts or sales.
About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"S Reymes 1770 is a “bobby dazzler” of a sampler. A glorious floral border surrounds decorative rows of vines laden with flowers, a band of Irish stitch (also known as Florentine and flame stitch), rows of alphabets worked both in cross stitch and eyelet stitch. The verse is worked with red silk and a small black dog sits incongruously atop a flower head. The sampler is reminiscent of the samplers stitched by Abigail Dingle in 1762 and Jane Brunton in 1763. We suspect that the three samplers were worked under the same needlework teacher in Norwich.
On the reverse of Sarah’s sampler it is recorded that this was “Mrs Lungley’s work”. From family history records we know that Sarah was 11 years old when she finished her sampler. She was born on Tuesday, July 17 in the year 1759 in Norwich in the county of Norfolk. She was named after a sister who was born and died in 1755. Sarah’s baptism on August 6 was recorded in the non-conformist records for the Old Meeting in Norwich."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
“Anna Sophia was 13 years old when she stitched her sampler. At age 22, in 1880, she can be found living at 20 Sussex Gardens, Hyde Park, London and marrying Frederick Charles Bishop. Anna Sophia and Frederick, together with their 3-month-old daughter Alice Maria, were recorded in the 1881 census as living at 149 Cromwell Road, Kensington. Frederick, at only 25, is listed as a butler, a prestigious role within the domestic servants’ hierarchy for one so young.
Anna Sophia and Frederick were to have one more child, a son called Charles Frederick, born in 1883. Anna Sophia passed away in 1884 aged just 26. She died in Norfolk, possibly she and the children had returned to her parents whilst ill.
The 1891 census finds Frederick in Chelsea, London, as the butler to the very wealthy Francis William Lowther and in charge of a large household staff."

Vickie & Maegan tell us "Mary's sampler has been recreated as best as it could, keeping in mind the deteriorated state of the antique, as well as her sometimes erratic stitches. We enjoy the menagerie at the bottom of her sampler, and like to think the plant at right is a large tomato plant - as it differs significantly from the large flowers elsewhere in Mary's sampler. Sadly without a town name, we were unable to locate our Mary with any degree of certainty."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Annie’s monochrome sampler has been a delight to reproduce. The little girl recorded that her sampler was stitched in Belvedere and completed in the December of 1887. She dedicated her sampler to her sovereign with the words “God Save The Queen”.
Belvedere is a town in the south-east of London that lies close to the River Thames.
The year of 1887 that Annie’s sampler marked was a very special year in Great Britain’s history. This year was the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Royal jubilees are an occasion to celebrate the life and reign of a monarch and are significant events which are celebrated around the world. Though the concept of the jubilee began in biblical times, today the term is most closely associated with the Royal Family and the ceremony and spectacle which the term symbolises."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Ruth Gibb is a very sweet little sampler stitched entirely in cross stitch over 2 threads and using only one colour – a rich, deep red, which concentrates the eye. The stitches pop out from the linen like jewels.
The lacy border frames the alphabets which are stitched in a very pretty font. The capital letter alphabet has an anomaly in the sequence of letters. The line ends with V X, and the W Y Z are stitched below. Either this was an error by Ruth, or it seems more likely to be by design, as the number of stitches needed to stitch the W would make it too big for the space at the end of the row. Perhaps she stitched the border first and then realised it wouldn’t fit and improvised. We’ll never know, but you can decide which way you think it was."

These were some exciting clues that we were able to follow through in our quest to discover Cicely’s story."

About the Sampler from the Designer
"Dorothy Walpole was born in New Garden in the Painestown Parish of Carlow, Ireland. On August 25th, 1794, she married Christopher Williams also of New Garden which was home to a large Quaker community. Where Dorothy worked her sampler is not known but it seems likely she attended a small private school in the locality. Certainly her family owned land in the area and enjoyed a reasonably comfortable lifestyle.
Embroidered on unbleached linen this beautiful band sampler employs Florentine, cross, petit point, queen, herringbone and counted satin stitches. It is divided into sections within a simple strawberry border comprising alphabets in a variety of stitches, a four line verse, a wide band of Florentine work and flowers on curling stems with the petals dramatically outlined. On 40 count linen the reproduction sampler will measure approximately 9″ x 24″ and most closely approximates the size of the original. It is recommended for intermediate level needleworkers. (See also the sampler by her daughter, Mary Williams.
The initials DR remain a mystery. This genealogical information comes via Michael Goodbody.
According to the records in the Dublin Historical library, Dorothy Walpole was a Quaker by birth. She was born 9 September 1762, the daughter of John & Elisabeth Walpole. She died at New Garden 6 June 1829. She married 25 August 1793 Christopher Williams (also a Quaker) of New Garden, Co. Carlow and they had at least seven children, including the two daughters, Elisabeth (born 20 May 1794) and Mary, born 15 October 1797. Elisabeth, possibly known as Eliza died at Newgarden in 1858 aged 64 but that is uncertain. What happened to Mary is unknown. She would have been only seven years old when she did her sampler.
There were a number of sons, including George (born 4 May 1804), who moved to Dublin in 1842. He suffered continuing business difficulties and was “disowned” by the Quaker, although his children appear to have remained members. In 1829 George married Margaret Woods, by whom he appears to have had eight children, including sons George (b.1843) and James (b.1832) who were partners along with Robert Woods in the forerunner of Williams & Woods, preserve manufacturers. George and James were grandsons of Dorothy and Christopher Williams."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Sophia recorded on her sampler “Nailsea 1804”. Whilst there is no record of a Quaker school in Nailsea, it is possible that Sophia was a pupil boarding at Sidcot and recorded “Nailsea” as the location of her home rather than that of the school.
Sophia married Mark May, a farmer, on April 8, 1816. Mary, their first of eight children, was baptised the following February. The family can be found in the census returns at Mays Green in the village of Puxton. Mark died in 1867 and Sophia two years later in 1869, just before her 80th birthday."

About the Sampler from the Designer
"Mary finished her sampler on November 22 but, alas, the last two digits of the year have been removed. This is what is known as a vanity sampler. Later in life, when a samplermaker did not want to reveal her true age, she would remove or alter the date on her needlework.
Without the decade the sampler was worked in, we thought that we would not be able to find our Mary Choak(s). However, the research gods were smiling down on us. A search of family history records for baptisms in the 1800s resulted in 17 hits. Through our knowledge of sampler styles in this century we discounted those born before 1810 and after 1880. This left us with three Marys. Two were born in Cornwall, and one was born in London to Cornish parents who returned to Cornwall where they raised their daughter.
All three girls we found were raised in or around Helston which is the town nearest to where Nicola lives. We strongly suspect that our Mary is Mary Ann Choaks who was born in 1841 in the village of Mawgan-in-Meneage, just south of Helston on the Lizard Peninsula. Within the booklet there is detauled information about Mary’s life."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"What a remarkable child Rosa was. Rosa tells us that she completed her sampler on July 20, a Wednesday, in the year 1881.
We have found Rosa in family history records. She was born in July 1877 at Aspley End in Hertfordshire to Charles and Adelaide (née Sears). In the 1881 census, which was compiled in the April, Charles was noted as a butcher and Rosa, at the age of 3 years, as a scholar. One would have expected a three-year-old to have had no occupation recorded. It was unusual for a child of three to attend school. It is also unusual for a child to stitch a sampler at such a young age! Rosa only turned four in the July of 1881."

"Ellen was baptised on April 19, 1885 at Burgh Castle, Norfolk. Her parents were James, a seaman, and his wife Clare. Ellen recorded on her sampler that she finished her sampler in the January of 1895 in Belton.
Ellen married Alfred George Edwards, an engine cleaner, on December 19, 1902 at the age of 18. In the 1911 census return Alfred was working as a railway goods porter. Ellen and Alfred had had 4 children with three boys living (a fifth son was born after the census). The family had relocated to Yorkshire and were living at 72 Mount Street, Henley Grove, Rotherham. They remained in Rotherham, where Alfred and Ellen both died in 1958. Ellen was 72 years of age.
We very much hope that the home Ellen made for herself and her family was indeed “Home Sweet Home”."

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"Esther’s beautiful work has enchanted Nicola from her first glimpse of the sampler. The original sampler was worked in wool on approximately 24ct Penelope canvas. Esther had a wonderful eye for colour, her chosen palette included pink, mauve, apricot, raspberry, salmon, garnet, and coral. A delicious combination that makes the fingers itch to stitch.
Esther recorded that she completed her sampler in the 12th year of her age in 1847. Our initial search of family history records found two possible Esthers. However, after a more thorough investigation, neither of the girls’ years of birth quite fitted our Esther, who would have been born in either 1834 or 1835."
Hands Across the Sea - Ann Borrett 1646 - Soie 1003 Thread Kit
HATS_BORRET_SMS
Ann Borrett, 1646 is another little gem sampler from Hands Across the Sea. Ann’s beautiful band sampler is highly decorative and even though she “rovght” her sampler three hundred and seventy-four years ago, the colours are still intense today.
Ann stitched her sampler over 3 threads of linen with stitches that are reversible. If you prefer, your sampler could be executed over 2 threads.

About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:
"The first two bands of Ann’s sampler also appear in the band sampler stitched by Jeane Vally in 1646. Jeane’s sampler is in the Goodhart Collection at Montecute House and is featured in the book “The Goodhart Collection” on page 88.
Band samplers were the traditional “test pieces” worked by young girls. Ann’s sampler or “sam cloth” is a visual catalogue of stitches and comprises of neat rows of patterns that are suitable for repeating motifs to adorn garments and household items. The alphabet at the bottom of Ann’s sampler and her inscription demonstrate her ability to mark household linen."
