About the Sampler from the Designer

"Magdalena was born in 1820 in Sutton in Holderness, Yorkshire to George and Mary Outhwaite. The rural village is now a suburb of the city of Hull and known as Sutton on Hull. Magdalena was baptised on May 28 of that year. George died in 1827 and life was no doubt hard for his widow raising her five children.

By the time Magdalene worked her sampler she had lost her father and a sister. The verse and aphorisms that she so diligently stitched would have brought her comfort when there was much to fear.

Magdalena’s life was one of domestic service. In the census returns between the years 1841 to 1881 she is recorded as a domestic servant, a cook, and a housekeeper. She never married and in the 1891 census she can be found as an elderly maiden aunt in the household of her niece. She died shortly after the 1891 census return.

We hope that Magdalena was beloved and that, throughout the many hardships she faced, her confidence was strong."

Elizabeth Stephenson, 1854 is a gorgeous sampler and the Queen of the May for 2025 from Hands Across the Sea.

The sampler is executed with cross stitches laid over two threads of linen. There are a small number of cross stitches that Elizabeth “squeezed in”, and these are laid 2 threads wide and one thread wide. The sampler is suitable for needleworkers of all levels of ability.

Elizabeth finished her stunning sampler on Wednesday, February 1, in the year 1854. The sampler would have been worked as part of her education. It would have taken many hours to complete and is an amazing achievement. A bobby dazzler of a sampler! Elizabeth created a cohesive, engaging, and visually balanced sampler. The sampler draws the viewer’s eye.

Regrettably, Elizabeth did not record her age or a location on her sampler; without this information we could not identify our Elizabeth as there were numerous girls of that name born in the 1840s. We do know that Elizabeth was born in the very early years of the Victorian era. This was a time of strict social structure, traditional gender roles, and rigid expectations, particularly for women and young girls. A Victorian girl’s life was largely shaped by her family’s social class, but across all classes, she was expected to be modest, obedient, and well-mannered. Her upbringing revolved around domestic skills, education, and preparation for marriage and motherhood.

While wealthy girls were groomed for lives of refinement and marriage, working-class girls often faced hard labour and limited opportunities. Regardless of status, most Victorian girls grew up in a world that emphasised obedience, modesty, and domestic skills over personal ambition or independence. Though their experiences varied, they all lived under the rigid expectations of a society that saw their primary role as future wives and mothers."

Sarah Daws, circa 1840 is a gorgeous sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

Sarah stitched her sampler with cross stitch mainly over 2 threads. The lowercase letters of the verse are stitched with cross stitch over 1. There is a scattering of cross stitches over one on a flower stalk. Backstitch has been used to outline the two ladies’ eyebrows and lips.

Whilst a large sampler with some 72,000 stitches it is suitable for all levels of ability.

About the Sampler from the Designer

"Sarah’s exquisite sampler is worked almost entirely in cross stitch with the exception of a handful of backstitches. Sarah did not include a date on her sampler, however, from other dated samplers in Nicola’s collection, which include some of Sarah’s distinctive motifs, we are able to date the sampler to around 1840.

Worked in brightly coloured silks the sampler clearly shows the influence of the Berlin woolwork patterns which became so popular in Victorian England. The sampler is contained within a particularly beautiful and intricate floral border that captivates and delights. When viewing the sampler the eye is drawn to the lower section of the sampler where Sarah stitched a truly splendid parrot flanked by two pretty young ladies. Sarah incorporated 3 seashells into her design."

About the Sampler from the Designer

"It is with great pleasure that we present to you the needlework of Elizabeth Dinsdale. It is so unusual for three pieces of a young girl’s needlework to stay together through the centuries. We feel honoured to be the present custodians of Elizabeth’s work.

Two of the three samplers bear the date “May the 26^th 1843” and three very poignant words “LIFE IS SHORT” emphasised in capital lettering.

Contained within this booklet are two reproductions. Elizabeth’s simple primer worked when she was 12 years of age and the sampler she worked three years later. Several motifs in the sampler have been taken from the third sampler. Note the three urns of flowers and the pairs of deer.

A curious feature of the primer and the unreproduced sampler is that they both have the exact same date. Would Elizabeth have been working both projects at the same time, finishing them on the same date? How we wish we could ask her!"

About the Sampler from the Designer

"We are delighted to present to you this sweet sampler that was worked by Mary Ann Groom in the year 1876 when she was ten years old. We particularly liked the border that frames the young maker’s stitching. Mary Ann worked with a limited palette, yet she has created a colourful sampler with some very pretty motifs.

Although Mary Ann did not record her age or location on the sampler, her granddaughter Jackie carefully noted on the reverse of the frame that

“This was done by my grandmother, mother of Robert Edward Wesley Whitbread, my Dad. Bless him”

Jackie also included her name, address and telephone number. We telephoned Jackie, and she told us that she had inherited the sampler and only sold it when she downsized. Jackie knew very little about her grandparents as they were never talked about. She believed they had died when her father was a child.

Mary Ann was born on April 24, 1866 in Tebworth, a hamlet located in Central Bedfordshire. Her parents were Thomas Groom, a labourer, and his wife Charlotte. She was baptised in the Methodist church in Toddington.

The 1891 census return records that as a young woman Mary Ann worked as a straw-hat maker."

About the Sampler from the Designer

"Márta’s sampler was stitched in Budapest, Hungary in 1905 and Maggie’s in Pretoria, South Africa in 1900. Whilst the girls lived some 7,447 miles apart, they both stitched a primer sampler as part of their education.

We have made contact with Márta’s family, and they tell us that Márta Sarolta Lujza Mária Kauser was born in Budapest on May 6, 1895. Her parents were Nepomuk János Kauser and Sarolta Kölber. The Kausers and the Kölbers were wealthy families. They often married each other, sometimes for financial reasons. The Kölber family was given a noble title by Franz Joseph I. The Kausers were architects. The most well-known was Jozsef Kauser, who designed numerous public buildings, among them the interior of St. Stephen’s Basilica, a landmark of Budapest.

Márta died five months after her wedding in 1923 as a result of contracting the Spanish Flu.

Maggie Burridge has remained elusive. In a search of family history records, the family name of Burridge appears several times in the Transvaal. However, we cannot find a Maggie/Margaret. Maggie recorded that she stitched her sampler at Abingdon National Girls’ School, Pretoria in the June of 1900. This was during the Boer War.

The origins of the Boer War lay in Britain’s desire to unite the British South African territories of Cape Colony and Natal with the Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (also known as the Transvaal). The discovery of gold in the South African Republic (SAR) in 1886 raised the stakes.​​​​​​ A large number of English-speaking people, called Uitlanders (literally ‘Outlanders’) by the Afrikaners, were attracted by the gold fields. This worried the Boers, who saw them as a threat to their way of life.

Maggie’s formative years were dangerous times for people of all races in South Africa. At the same time Maggie finished her sampler, the British launched an offensive to relieve the siege of Pretoria.

About the Sampler from the Designer

"Alice records on her sampler that she attended St Ervan’s Board School. When the Elementary Education Act of 1870 came into force, school boards, public bodies in England and Wales, established and administered elementary schools in England between 1870 and 1902. Education was not free but the fees of the poorest children were paid by the parish. The schools were non-denominational and were not to impose any religious education, other than simple Bible reading.

We know that when Alice attended the Board School the headmistress was a Miss M M Winsor, and her assistant was Miss Dora Rowe who taught the infants. We suspect that it was Miss Winsor who taught Alice needlework.

Alice was born to William Tippett, a stone mason and his wife Mary Jane, née Parsons. Her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1883; however, she was not baptised until July 23 at the Bible Christian Church in the village of Penrose. The village is in the parish of St Ervan which can be found a short distance inland on the North Cornish coast. Tippetts can be found living in this beautiful part of Cornwall today and all the way back to the early 1600s.

William and his brother James built the chapel, and the foundation service was held on 24 May 1861.

The Bible Christian Church was a Methodist denomination founded by William O’Bryan, a local Wesleyan Methodist preacher, on 18 October 1815 in North Cornwall. Members of the Church were sometimes known as Bryanites, after their founder.

William died in 1893, and sadly, three years later, on 13 June 1896 Alice died at the very young age of 13 years. Her death certificate records the cause of death as diphtheria. In the 1800s diphtheria was a major cause of death. Though mostly a disease associated with the poor and a particular threat to children, diphtheria did not discriminate by class and age. Its cause, spread and a cure remained a mystery until the last part of the 19^th century."

"When Elizabeth’s sampler first arrived, we were so excited by her gentle beauty. The sampler had probably been hung, for some time, in a position where dappled sunshine fell across the linen. Rather than detract, the faded elegance has added to her beauty. From the back of Elizabeth’s sampler, and three others from the same school that are in the collection of Hands Across the Sea Samplers, we know that these samplers originally burst with vibrant colours. We chose to replicate the time mellowed colours on the front, with occasional help from the back. The soft pinks, creams and olives of today are a delight for the eye.

Elizabeth made good use of her linen choosing many beautiful motifs to fill her sampler. There are three sections contained within a meandering vine which is heavily laden with a profusion of violas, star flowers and snowdrops.  In the top section flanked by baskets and urns filled with a profusion of flowers and fruit is one of our favourite verses ~ “Next unto God Dear Parents I address …….”

This verse was very popular with school girls to stitch on their samplers. It first appeared in 1695 in an educational manual entitled “The Young Man’s Companion: Or, Arithmetick Made Easy” by William Mather.  The book was an encyclopaedia of “practical lessons and useful information applicable to many professions and was intended for the use of both the schoolmaster and the self taught”....."

Multiply Kindness is an original design sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

The stitches used are cross stitch over two threads, satin stitches for the centre of some flower head (the satin stitches can be replaced with cross stitch) and some straight stitches for the flower stamens.

About the Sampler from the Designer

"Why an original design versus a reproduction sampler? Since I first started to collect antique samplers, I have obsessively searched for multiplication samplers, but I have never come across the one that made my heart sing and my fingers itch to stitch. Whilst I have a few in my collection, none of them called to me to stitch them.

It was a colourful multiplication table sampler that caught my eye back in the 1980s that led to me stitching my first sampler. Whilst in a dentist’s waiting room, I picked up a magazine and came across an article which featured an interview with Moria Blackburn. There were many photographs of Moria’s beautiful designs, but one particular sampler stood out – a large colourful multiplication table sampler. I immediately wanted to take up stitching and recreate the sampler for my son. My journey with cross stitch and samplers was about to begin.

Within days I visited a needlework store and, whilst I could not find the chart for the multiplication table sampler, I came away with a kit to stitch my first sampler. Several years later, I had stitched all the samplers that Moira had charted but not the multiplication table sampler. After exhausting Moria’s portfolio of work, I went in search of other designers and discovered the needlework community and blogs. It was then that the world of needlework with its beautiful linens and glorious silks flung open its doors and my deep love of samplers worked in centuries past bloomed. This in turn led me to collect samplers and to research their history. A few years later, Hands Across the Sea Samplers released its first reproduction sampler.

Shortly after HATS’ first release, I entered into correspondence with Moria and discovered that the multiplication table sampler featured in the magazine was not one of her own designs but another designer’s. The sampler had caught her eye too, and she had stitched it for her children!"

"On March 1, in the year of our Lord 1826, Hannah Green completed her sampler at the age of 12 years. It is a truly stunning sampler. The composition of this sampler is what captures the viewer’s eye, holds their attention, and controls the movement of the eye. Strong artistic compositions are vital to the success of a piece of art (yes schoolgirl samplers are art).

I have spent many hours studying Hannah’s sampler – her work draws you in. We can be affected by a beautiful design without understanding why. There is something about Hannah’s sampler that creates a sense of gentle harmony. The colours that Hannah used in her sampler are rich and vibrant, yet no one hue dominates; there is harmony and balance."

Charlotte Amelia Stephans, 1834 is a beautiful 19th century English Sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

Please note that the border in the sampler requires careful counting when stitching. Sandra found that she had miscounted when stitching the model. Please follow the graph and not the photograph!

In the March of 2019, I stumbled across a stunning sampler in an auction catalogue. The sampler had been worked by Jane Harris Hogson in 1833. When Jane arrived, there were many oohs and aahs amongst my needlework friends. I decided to gift Jane to my dearest friend Sandra as she had fallen in love with the sampler. We both share a passion for large samplers with sweeping floral borders.

Amazingly, I then came across an almost identical sampler for sale which I was lucky enough to acquire. The second sampler was dated 1834 and was stitched by Charlotte Amelia Stevens. There was no doubt that these two samplers were closely connected.

Both girls were 13 years old when they worked their samplers. Other than their names and the years (1833 and 1834) there are no discernible differences. The composition of the samplers, colours, verses and the wording of the dedications are the same. Jane finished her sampler on Friday, September 20, 1833, and Charlotte on Thursday, June 19, 1834.

When Sandra received Jane, she initially planned to reproduce her. However, when I acquired Charlotte, Sandra decided that she would recreate Charlotte, so that the two girls could hang together in her home. It has been an epic four-year journey for Sandra with the girls. The sampler presented to you within this booklet is Sandra’s interpretation of Charlotte and Jane.

At the start of my research, the two girls were initially illusive. Jane’s surname was spelt Hodgson in the family history records. In the 1800s the spelling of names was much less consistent than today. Many people did not read or write, and parish clerks and census enumerators wrote names down in various ways.

I eventually found both girls in the village of Stoke. The village lies in the parish of Stoke Damerel, one of the ancient parishes of Devon. The parish includes stretches of the coast west of Plymouth and north of Devonport...."

Sarah Milthorp, 1834 is a beautiful Historical Sampler from Hands Across the Sea.

"The sampler that Sarah stitched when she was 12 years of age in 1834 is most certainly decorative. The young girl showed great diligence in working the intricate border and cartouche surrounding her name. We were strongly drawn to Sarah’s sampler the moment we glimpsed her in an auction catalogue. The red house takes centre stage.

The geometric motifs flanking the verse were another focal point of interest. Although we have seen these on other samplers, they are not common place. Sarah showed great industry with her needle and filled her sampler with many beautiful motifs, she would have been hard pressed to squeeze another motif in.

On March 2, 1822 Sarah Milthorp was baptised in Darrington. This small village and civil parish is located in the heart of the industrial West Riding of Yorkshire. Sarah’s father Thomas Milthorp was an agricultural labourer. Life as an agricultural labourer was hard work. Wages were usually low and housing standards often poor as labourers worked extremely long hours to scrape a living. Thomas’ children would have been expected to work on the land from as young as six years old, particularly at harvest time when everyone lent a hand making hay or harvesting crops."

Mary Choaks is a beautiful Cornish Historical Sampler from Hands Across the Sea

About the Sampler from the Designer

"Mary finished her sampler on November 22 but, alas, the last two digits of the year have been removed. This is what is known as a vanity sampler. Later in life, when a samplermaker did not want to reveal her true age, she would remove or alter the date on her needlework.

Without the decade the sampler was worked in, we thought that we would not be able to find our Mary Choak(s). However, the research gods were smiling down on us. A search of family history records for baptisms in the 1800s resulted in 17 hits. Through our knowledge of sampler styles in this century we discounted those born before 1810 and after 1880. This left us with three Marys. Two were born in Cornwall, and one was born in London to Cornish parents who returned to Cornwall where they raised their daughter.

All three girls we found were raised in or around Helston which is the town nearest to where Nicola lives. We strongly suspect that our Mary is Mary Ann Choaks who was born in 1841 in the village of Mawgan-in-Meneage, just south of Helston on the Lizard Peninsula. Within the booklet there is detauled information about Mary’s life."

"Ann covered every inch of her fabric and, in doing so, showed in the top section that she was more than competent in marking linen. The bottom section of her sampler contains a very chirpy bird, a butterfly, two dogs, and two shrubs heavily laden with flowers.

Ann Hutton Rathmell was born in Horsforth, Yorkshire on Saturday, August 7, 1841. She was baptised on Sunday, October 17 in Rawdon St Peter, an Anglican church. Her parents were Joseph Rathmell, a farmer, and his wife Mary, née Hutton. Ann was the first of eight children born to the couple. The family farmed Whetstone Farm in Horsforth.

Life was probably very hard on a farm in Yorkshire in the 1800s. Ann never married or was blessed with children. We hope that she lived a happy life. She died on December 24, 1900."

Ann Hutton Rathmell was born in Horsforth, Yorkshire on Saturday, August 7, 1841. She was baptised on Sunday, October 17 in Rawdon St Peter, an Anglican church. Her parents were Joseph Rathmell, a farmer, and his wife Mary, née Hutton. Ann was the first of eight children born to the couple. The family farmed Whetstone Farm in Horsforth.

Life was probably very hard on a farm in Yorkshire in the 1800s. Ann never married or was blessed with children. We hope that she lived a happy life. She died on December 24, 1900."

"What a pretty sampler Elizabeth stitched when she was just ten years old. The young child finished her sampler on Wednesday, October 4, 1797 – some 226 years ago. It was such a long time ago.

At first glance, one might think that Elizabeth’s sampler was stitched in Norfolk due to the beautiful floral outer border and the lozenge-shaped inner border. Even the chosen verse was very popular on Norfolk samplers. Elizabeth’s sampler was actually stitched in the county of Essex, which is separated from Norfolk by the county of Suffolk. Elizabeth Fitch was born in 1787 at Helions Bumpstead in Essex. This small village is located near Haverhill, and it is where the Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire borders meet. What we are seeing in her sampler are whispers of Norfolk and Suffolk samplers."

Scotland’s family history records are not the easiest ones to research, and without an age to indicate a year of birth, we cannot pinpoint Mary with certainty. However, a possible Mary was born on March 24, 1819. She was baptised in Saint Cuthberts in Edinburgh on April 25^th. Her parents were James Cornwall and his wife Elizabeth, née Sime.

One of the distinguishing features of Scottish samplers are the inclusion of family initials. Mary’s parents’ initials matched the first two recorded by Mary on her sampler. Mary had a brother Thomas and a sister Margaret, a TC and an MC are the third and fourth set of initials on her sampler."

"Maria was an excellent stitcher.  Her execution was precise and accurate.  It amazes me that at the young age of 11 Maria took such great care with her work.  My impression of Maria is that she was a very organized and disciplined girl.  She shows great attention to detail in the way that she matched her top and bottom borders and then also matched her side borders with perfect symmetry.

In the border flowers, she carefully placed each pair of colours so as to not repeat a combination.  She did so similarly in the floral band beneath the verse. I think she was very intentional with her colours and that the results were not just a happy accident.  The balance of greens, reds, and blue against an otherwise neutral palette makes the sampler so visually appealing and alive with colour.  I feel Maria’s sampler is a master class in design, colour placement, and execution."
