    "What a shame that Mary did not record the year she finished her sampler and other information such as a date or location. The samplers stitched by Stuart, Georgian, and Victorian schoolgirls can provide us with a window through which we can catch glimpses of their lives. Recreating their work is a time when we can remember the forgotten women.

    So often women disappear into history, their lives unrecorded. Yet in the face of enormous challenges, numerous women have fought their way to the fore and flourished. There are so many women overlooked who defied the norm, excelled, and made lasting impacts on those around them and beyond. Did Mary grow up to be such a woman? Sadly, we will never know.

    Two swans catch the eye. White swans symbolise light, grace, beauty, love, and purity. The swan is an emblem of feminine beauty and softness. Fairy tales feature swans as emblems of devotion, loyalty, and monogamy; this comes from the fact that the swan mates once in a lifetime."

        "What a feast for the eyes! It is such a shame that the child who created this winsome sampler did not include her name. All that is recorded are the initials WJ, PH, and the year 1888.

        We sense that the sampler’s maker was industrious and enjoyed stitching her sampler. She used wool on 18ct Penelope canvas. The child certainly had an ebullient sense of colour and a vivid imagination.

        The giant pear and rose, completely out of proportion, flank the red house. With smoke billowing from all its chimneys, the viewer is invited into the house through its open side door. A family home is definitely at the heart of this sampler."

              "The small mill town of Brighouse stands on the bank of the River Calder in North Yorkshire. In 1753 there were only 55 houses in Brighouse with many local people working in the textile industry from their own homes.

              In the 1841 census the Fletcher family can be found living on New Road. In the 1851 census Sarah was in service as a housemaid to a merchant’s family in Wells Close, Hipperholme cum Brighouse. It appears that her father had died by this time, and her mother can be found as the head of the household with Pricilla and two grandchildren. She is noted as a proprietor of houses, indicating a level of financial comfort. Unfortunately, we can find no further mention with a degree of certainty of our Sarah."

                      About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

                      "Emily’s needlework has been reproduced using the slightly mellowed colours found on the front of her sampler. The ten-year-old child used wool and 20ct Penelope canvas to create an elegant sampler that gracefully flows from row to row. Her sampler contains elements that are reminiscent of the artwork on Roman Catholic prayer cards. Emily recorded that she completed her pretty sampler on November 18, 1874 at the Convent of Mercy in Chelsea.

                      Emily Augustine Marie Wildhack was born on April 13, 1864 in Chelsea, London, to Robert Andrew Frederick Wildhack and Marie Josephine Arcolier. Robert, a courier, was born in Vienna and became a naturalised British subject; Marie was born in Belgium. They married on August 31, 1847 in London. Emily was named after a sister who died in 1860 before reaching her first birthday."

                          About the Sampler from Nicola Parkman:

                          "Emilie worked her sampler on approximately 24ct linen with wool threads in 1890. The sampler was backed with a piece of cotton fabric and edged and bound with silk ribbon and four silk bows. In the top section of her sampler Emilie diligently stitched her numbers and two sets of the alphabet, one in a simple, clean font and the other in an impressive font. In the bottom section there is a burst of colour as Emilie laid attractive geometric border patterns.

                          We have given some thought to Emilie’s surname. The Kalwar are an Indian caste historically found in the northern and central India. However, it is also a surname that is found in German family history records. Using Ancestry, we were able to find an Emilie Charlotte Kalwar who was born in Latvia on July 28, 1864 to Adalph and Elwine. Her birth is recorded in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. If this is the correct Emilie, then she was 26 years old when she stitched her sampler."
